Blog: Got My Hands on PSP2

I've played about 30 hours of this sequel so far and I seem to have trouble going back to playing regular Phantasy Star Universe on the home console. Just about everything in this sequel (it's also the direct sequel to not only PSP, but PSU) is better than any other Universe-based Phantasy Star. There are no more tedious leveling of photon arts, as the game has gone back to PSO's roots and inducted the art of finding disks. Now you can just pay attention to hacking away at the enemies. This works to the advantage of the game anyhow. You can no longer spam your PAs, because you will quickly run out of PP very fast. PP is now tied to your character and never changes. Normal attacks have been given new purpose and you will find yourself using them more often than a photon art attack. You build up a Chain of normal attacks and then unleash your PA upon a target for increased damage: the higher the chain, the more damage the PA will do. You can also just guard with any two-handed weapon or shield and increase the chain, also nullifying damage taken.

The online mode is free, there are more people playing than PSU, and it's easier to find parties, because everything is centralized from a list, not unlike PSO, except you don't need to go through a bezel of lobbies to find anybody. Just go to either Universe 1 or Universe 2 and an entire list of parties is at your helm. There's simply more to do, more levels and weapons, and more customization options for your characters and rooms than before. If you can't read Japanese, you may be able to get on by just fine if you know how to play PSU already. The only downside is you may only be able to loosely follow the story, but for online, you can chat away in English if your friends have the game as well. I highly recommend importing this game.
