New York Comic Con 2009 -- Screens and Impressions

My con cherry has been popped.

Other than the hentai videos and PC games, I think most people showed up for the buying of comics. The people who were selling hand-made corsets were really strange. They didn't have a website, phone to call, or even a business card and gave me an evil eye when I didn't want to pay $300 for one. I got to see IGN's last panel in the IGN Theater with the cast of Fringe, of which at least 2000 fans showed up for. I haven't been to a panel before, but it was really cool and Joshua and John had great chemistry together in person.

I was pretty disappointed with the Square Enix booth. They were only selling stuff and not showing of ANYTHING. On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised with Sega's booth, even though all their games were for the Wii. I got to play The Conduit, something I probably wouldn't have picked up if the opportunity didn't present itself. It was a really fun game and I actually got into it on the floor, which didn't happen too much with Riddick when I played that (but I needed more time with it). Um, GTA: Chinatown Wars was pretty bad, I thought. The area Rockstar had was neat and they handed out tons of giftbags (but I didn't want one). But really, the controls in it were not that great and it was very awkward overall.

I got to watch some of Prototype being played and I was impressed, but it wasn't anything like I expected from just hearing about it from a friend earlier. It looked exactly like GTA, except it seemed like it mated with Ninja Gaiden. It definitely piqued my interest and I think it's one to watch out for. The real prize for gaming at the show was easily X-MEN Origins: Wolverine. There was a line to get into an enclosed booth with a 15-minute live demonstration with commentating by a producer from Activision. I don't really play these kinds of games, but Wolverine was SO freaking BLOODY AND GORY and the real-time damage and slow regeneration on Wolverine really made a big difference. The way Wolverine slices off limbs and rips into enemies or snaps them in half was something else. The pre-rendered cut-scenes were gorgeous and violent, too. Raven Software is holding nothing back on this game and it is an obvious M-rated title. Thank goodness, somebody who has the balls to make a game where his claws actually cut the **** out of everything!

Oh, and Ghostbusters was fantastic looking (except the Wii version... it was completely cartoon-y and unlike the other versions). The entire world seemed like it was destructible and lines of holes would appear in everything if the beams hit it. Back to Riddick, though, the original game included seems like the exact same character models and textures, but it did look great in HD. The expanded story of Dark Athena was altogether another beauty that really was worth seeing. I loved the original and await this version very much! As a closer to the games... Star Trek Online looked half decent from the video.

1. Yes, that is me... but I ditched the cat ears at the con.
2. That's not my hand... some jerk put it there as I took the picture. I didn't notice until now.
3. Some cosplayer being Indy. He did a really good job!

4. Riddick booth was nice and dark. No screenshots allowed inside, however.
5. Staypuft eating the con-goer, oh noes!
6. Free hairdos for anybody wanting their hair styled up like Goku's or Bulma's from the upcoming movie (it actually looks really good).

7. A white mage from Final Fantasy XI. How could I not take a picture?
8. Totally worth the wait in line to see. I had a sweet seat up in the front, too. Game of the show!
9. RubyEclipse, a GM on PSU, giving out PSU swag to players who knew the answers to questions he posted on message boards. He's so young!
